The spacecraft\u2019s current mission, OTV-7,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/battlefield-tech\/space\/2023\/12\/29\/us-space-force-sends-x-37b-craft-on-another-secretive-mission\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">began in December\u00a0<\/a>with the goal of experimenting with future space domain awareness technologies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 kEzXdV body-paragraph body-paragraph\">While many details of the mission are classified, the Space Force\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.spaceforce.mil\/News\/Article-Display\/Article\/3932137\/x-37b-begins-novel-space-maneuver\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">offered a rare glimpse into the X-37B\u2019s latest endeavor<\/a>\u00a0in a press release Thursday, revealing that the spaceplane is preparing to conduct what\u2019s called an aerobraking maneuver.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 kEzXdV body-paragraph body-paragraph\">Although it\u2019s a new move for the X-37B, aerobraking has been used by NASA and other space agencies for years. The technique involves a series of passes that rely on the drag of Earth\u2019s atmosphere. Chance Saltzman said in a statement.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 kEzXdV body-paragraph body-paragraph\">The spacecraft will use the aerobraking maneuvers to change its orbit around Earth and dispose of its service module before completing its test mission. The Space Force didn\u2019t provide details on when it expects the spacecraft to return to Earth.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 kEzXdV body-paragraph body-paragraph\">U.S. Space Command has identified a growing need for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/battlefield-tech\/space\/2024\/03\/12\/space-force-mulls-refueling-as-industry-calls-for-funding-standards\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">what it calls dynamic space operations<\/a>, or the ability for satellites to maneuver away from threats or toward objects in space that operators may want to observe more closely. That\u2019s a departure from today\u2019s spacecraft, most of which are designed to remain in a specific orbital position throughout their service life.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 kEzXdV body-paragraph body-paragraph\">As a result, existing spacecraft have a finite amount of fuel and their gas tanks aren\u2019t meant to be refueled in orbit. The Space Force is pursuing options for new spacecraft designs that include larger fuel tanks and ports for refueling or maintenance, as well as additional spacecraft and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/battlefield-tech\/space\/2022\/11\/10\/why-the-space-force-is-getting-serious-about-on-orbit-servicing\/\">\u00a0other in-orbit infrastructure to provide those services<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 kEzXdV body-paragraph body-paragraph\">Air Force Secretary Frank Kendall said the X-37B maneuvers could have significant implications for how the Space Force navigates the environment in the future.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 kEzXdV body-paragraph body-paragraph\">\u201cThis novel and efficient series of maneuvers demonstrates the Space Force\u2019s commitment to achieving groundbreaking innovation as it conducts national security missions in space,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 kEzXdV body-paragraph body-paragraph\">Michelle Parker, vice president of Boeing\u2019s Space Mission Systems said tests like this are \u201ccritical\u201d to future space operations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 kEzXdV body-paragraph body-paragraph\">\u201cThere is no other space platform as capable, flexible and maneuverable as the X-37B, and its next demonstration will be another proof point that this test vehicle sets the pace of innovation,\u201d she said in a statement.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Space Force\u2019s X-37B spaceplane is embarking on a new set of maneuvers that could inform future space operations for the service.
