{"id":544,"date":"2024-11-10T10:54:50","date_gmt":"2024-11-10T10:54:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thedefencenews.com\/?p=544"},"modified":"2024-11-10T10:55:26","modified_gmt":"2024-11-10T10:55:26","slug":"nato-allies-ready-sea-drones-for-the-task-of-repelling-enemy-warships","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thedefencenews.com\/?p=544","title":{"rendered":"NATO allies ready sea drones for the task of repelling enemy warships"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 kEzXdV body-paragraph body-paragraph\">PARIS \u2014 A number of NATO countries are pursuing new naval concepts based on sea drones programmed to keep adversaries out of allied waters, a nod to Ukraine\u2019s pursuits with such weapons against Russian ships.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 kEzXdV body-paragraph body-paragraph\">The alliance nations belong to the so-called Joint Capability Group for Maritime Unmanned Systems, or JCGMUS. The group, created following the 2018 NATO summit in Brussels, comprises more than a dozen nations considered full members, partners or observers.<\/p>\n<div id=\"slot-wrapper-f0fnR1Q0EmO27j3\" class=\"AdWrapper-sc-1cwvedt-0 dbihyj dfp-ad dfp-ad--rectangle \" data-state=\"viewed\" data-last-reload-count=\"0\">\n<div class=\"ad-slot\">\n<div class=\"adunitContainer\">\n<div id=\"ad-slot-f0fnR1Q0EmO27j3\" class=\"adBox\" data-google-query-id=\"CK-m3-nE0YkDFRieUAYdYEog9A\">\n<div id=\"google_ads_iframe_114235265\/DefenseNews\/europe\/in-article_0__container__\">Every September, member countries stage one of the largest experimentation exercises with naval unmanned systems \u2013 the drill is abbreviated REPMUS \u2013 in concert with the Portuguese Navy to help accelerate drone technology testing and interoperability among allies.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 kEzXdV body-paragraph body-paragraph\">Next year, the emphasis will fall on using unmanned systems to keep adversary forces at a distance, a new tack for the group.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 kEzXdV body-paragraph body-paragraph\">\u201cThe roadmap of REPMUS will focus in 2025 on non-traditional sea denial \u2013 that is limiting an adversary\u2019s maritime freedom of action, including through anti-access, area denial, and disruptive and dispersible capabilities, based in part on of what we\u2019ve seen in Ukraine,\u201d Craig Sawyer, chair of JCGMUS said during a panel discussion at the Euronaval defense exhibition here on Nov. 5.<\/p>\n<div id=\"slot-wrapper-f0fnQgafEmO27Cs\" class=\"AdWrapper-sc-1cwvedt-0 dbihyj dfp-ad dfp-ad--rectangle \" data-state=\"viewed\" data-last-reload-count=\"0\">\n<div class=\"ad-slot\">\n<div class=\"adunitContainer\">\n<div id=\"ad-slot-f0fnQgafEmO27Cs\" class=\"adBox\" data-google-query-id=\"CLCm3-nE0YkDFRieUAYdYEog9A\">\n<div id=\"google_ads_iframe_114235265\/DefenseNews\/europe\/in-article_1__container__\">One of the elements that allowed the Ukrainian Navy to create an anti-access perimeter was the deployment of different types of unmanned surface vessels, which in some cases drove straight into Russian vessels at sea or in port to neutralize them.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 kEzXdV body-paragraph body-paragraph\">The NATO official also added that one of the ambitions for next year\u2019s drill will be to deliver an anti-submarine warfare barrier project demonstrator, an initiative established in 2020 and led by the United Kingdom.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 kEzXdV body-paragraph body-paragraph\">\u201cThe ASW barrier seeks to develop a technical demonstrator comprising both legacy and interoperable maritime uncrewed systems to securely provide a force multiplying anti-submarine warfare capability,\u201d Sawyer said during his presentation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 kEzXdV body-paragraph body-paragraph\">The project involves 12 other countries, including Italy, Canada, France, Germany, Spain, the U.S., Portugal, Denmark, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden and Australia.<\/p>\n<div id=\"slot-wrapper-f0fgnA3kEmO274L\" class=\"AdWrapper-sc-1cwvedt-0 dCayuq dfp-ad dfp-ad--in-article \" data-state=\"rendered\" data-last-reload-count=\"0\">\n<div class=\"ad-slot\">\n<div class=\"adunitContainer\">\n<div id=\"ad-slot-f0fgnA3kEmO274L\" class=\"adBox\" data-google-query-id=\"CLGm3-nE0YkDFRieUAYdYEog9A\">\n<div id=\"google_ads_iframe_114235265\/DefenseNews\/europe\/in-article_2__container__\">The widespread use of drones seen in Ukraine across all domains has spurred greater investments in these technologies, with many countries having launched national tenders to acquire new platforms.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 kEzXdV body-paragraph body-paragraph\">While procuring more unmanned assets is necessary for many nations, Sawyer warned of the risk of tackling them alone.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 kEzXdV body-paragraph body-paragraph\">\u201cThe need for standards and interoperability becomes critical when you realize the mass and scale UxS [unmanned systems]
