{"id":2700,"date":"2026-04-20T01:51:29","date_gmt":"2026-04-19T23:51:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thedefencenews.com\/?p=2700"},"modified":"2026-04-10T12:09:05","modified_gmt":"2026-04-10T10:09:05","slug":"us-and-uk-teaming-up-to-destroy-underwater-drones","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thedefencenews.com\/?p=2700","title":{"rendered":"US and UK teaming up to destroy underwater drones"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 bFwqVI body-paragraph body-paragraph\"><strong>America and Britain are joining forces to tackle the threat of underwater drones to ports and other critical infrastructure, according to a solicitation by the Pentagon\u2019s Defense Innovation Unit.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 bFwqVI body-paragraph body-paragraph\">The two nations are seeking a comprehensive suite of commercial systems that can detect and destroy a variety of undersea robots, including unmanned underwater vehicles, remotely operated vehicles, and semisubmersibles.<\/p>\n<div id=\"slot-wrapper-f0fnR1Q0EmO27j3\" class=\"AdWrapper-sc-1cwvedt-0 kNmwWS  dfp-ad dfp-ad--rectangle \" data-state=\"rendered\" data-last-reload-count=\"0\">\n<div class=\"ad-slot\">\n<div class=\"adunitContainer\">\n<div id=\"ad-slot-f0fnR1Q0EmO27j3\" class=\"adBox\" data-google-query-id=\"CPLvxPCE45MDFdY8VQgdJkUMLw\">\n<div id=\"google_ads_iframe_114235265\/C4isrnet\/unmanned\/in-article_0__container__\">\u201cCurrent solutions are fragmented, expensive, and limited in number,\u201d warned the solicitation. The primary focus of the Robotic Exclusion and Engagement Framework, or REEF, project is to protect \u201cports and harbors from underwater threats of varying size and sophistication, while the broader goal is to protect all U.S. critical waterways.\u201d<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 bFwqVI body-paragraph body-paragraph\">DIU envisions using off-the-shelf sensors, edge processing, active and passive sensors, sensor fusion, decoys and other technologies to create a stand-alone solution that can be quickly deployed as needed. This can include fixed systems such as moored buoys and buried cables, or mobile systems such as USVs, UUVs, UAVs and drifting buoys.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 bFwqVI body-paragraph body-paragraph\">Sensors should be able to utilize artificial intelligence to discriminate between hostile undersea drones, versus non-threats such as marine life, cargo ships and fishing vessels.<\/p>\n<div id=\"slot-wrapper-f0fnQgafEmO27Cs\" class=\"AdWrapper-sc-1cwvedt-0 kNmwWS  dfp-ad dfp-ad--rectangle \" data-state=\"rendered\" data-last-reload-count=\"0\">\n<div class=\"ad-slot\">\n<div class=\"adunitContainer\">\n<div id=\"ad-slot-f0fnQgafEmO27Cs\" class=\"adBox\" data-google-query-id=\"CPPvxPCE45MDFdY8VQgdJkUMLw\">\n<div id=\"google_ads_iframe_114235265\/C4isrnet\/unmanned\/in-article_1__container__\">\u201cThe system must provide sufficient detection-to-response time for human in-the-loop decision-making such that underwater threats can be safely interdicted or neutralized,\u201d the solicitation noted.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 bFwqVI body-paragraph body-paragraph\">The system will employ kinetic and nonkinetic approaches to stop drones. Nonkinetic methods can include rapidly deployable nets, bubble curtains and synthetic barriers. Kinetic defenses can include kinetic payloads, acoustic directed energy and physical coupling devices.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 bFwqVI body-paragraph body-paragraph\">Preference will be given to nonkinetic solutions, the solicitation said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 bFwqVI body-paragraph body-paragraph\">REEF will emphasize decoys to protect waterways and critical infrastructure. \u201cCapabilities to confuse adversarial underwater craft are of high interest. These can be low-cost attritable systems or more technologically advanced systems that use signals to act as a decoy to prevent the successful completion of the adversary\u2019s mission,\u201d according to the solicitation.<\/p>\n<div id=\"slot-wrapper-f0fgnA3kEmO274L\" class=\"AdWrapper-sc-1cwvedt-0 ikWLVz  dfp-ad dfp-ad--in-article \" data-state=\"viewable\" data-last-reload-count=\"0\" data-last-view-time=\"1775815671643\" data-view-count=\"1\">\n<div class=\"ad-slot\">\n<div class=\"adunitContainer\">\n<div id=\"ad-slot-f0fgnA3kEmO274L\" class=\"adBox\" data-google-query-id=\"CPTvxPCE45MDFdY8VQgdJkUMLw\">\n<div id=\"google_ads_iframe_114235265\/C4isrnet\/unmanned\/in-article_2__container__\">REEF should require little training to operate and use AI to provide users with suggestions. It must be compatible with existing U.S. command-and-control systems and common operating pictures.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 bFwqVI body-paragraph body-paragraph\">Cooperation with the U.K. will be eased by a 2024 Department of Commerce interim final rule that allows some controlled items to be shared with Britain.
