{"id":2466,"date":"2026-04-22T08:17:45","date_gmt":"2026-04-22T06:17:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thedefencenews.com\/?p=2466"},"modified":"2026-04-13T10:13:58","modified_gmt":"2026-04-13T08:13:58","slug":"to-accelerate-space-capabilities-pentagon-ups-golden-dome-spending-plan-by-10-billion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thedefencenews.com\/?p=2466","title":{"rendered":"Pentagon ups Golden Dome by $10 billion to accelerate space capabilities,"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Trump administration has upped its\u00a0Golden Dome\u00a0spending plan by $10 billion to accelerate the development of space capabilities to protect the homeland from incoming aerial threats, according to the four-star Space Force general leading the charge.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were asked to procure some additional space capabilities, so we are at $185 billion for the objective architecture,\u201d Gen. Michael Guetlein told an audience today at the McAleese Defense Programs conference.<\/p>\n<p>Some of those space-related capabilities that the Pentagon is working to move to the left include the Airborne Moving Target Indication (AMTI), Space Data Network and the Hypersonic Ballistic Tracking Space Sensor (HBTSS), he added. Speeding development of space-based interceptors, however, remains a concern.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is not the technology, it\u2019s the scalability of the affordability,\u201d Guetlein said. \u201cCan we scale those solutions fast enough and affordable enough to be effective against the threat? [That] is really where the challenge is going to be.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"ad--youtube1x1\" class=\"ad ad--youtube1x1 ad--format-1x1\" data-nosnippet=\"\"><\/div>\n<p>Just days after taking the oath of office for a second time in early 2025, President Donald Trump\u00a0inked\u00a0an executive order calling for a sprawling, multilayered homeland air defense system. That effort was later rebranded as Golden Dome and handed over to Guetlein to manage with\u00a0a cost estimate of\u00a0$175 billion.<\/p>\n<p>Details of Golden Dome remain sparse, with lawmakers continuing to push publicly and privately for more information about the Scalable Homeland Innovative Enterprise Layered Defense (SHIELD) contracting vehicle that now has more than 2,400 awardees, according to Guetlein.<\/p>\n<div id=\"ad--story_content\" class=\"ad ad--story_content ad--format-square\" data-nosnippet=\"\"><\/div>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s one of the tools that I can leverage to move faster in the acquisition environment,\u201d he added. \u201cBut it\u2019s not my only tool, I can use any other contracting vehicles across the entire department.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While industry and lawmakers await details about the architecture and contracts, there are now nine companies with deals to build out the command and control layer of Golden Dome with Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman and Raytheon recently added to the consortium.
