{"id":1370,"date":"2026-01-25T08:46:36","date_gmt":"2026-01-25T06:46:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thedefencenews.com\/?p=1370"},"modified":"2025-12-23T13:16:16","modified_gmt":"2025-12-23T11:16:16","slug":"upgrade-inbound-for-uks-astute-nuclear-submarines","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thedefencenews.com\/?p=1370","title":{"rendered":"Upgrade inbound for UK\u2019s Astute nuclear submarines"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"drop-cap\">The UK Ministry of Defence has returned to French naval prime Naval Group for four additional Fresh Water Cooling Heat Exchanger (HEATEX) units, intended to be installed at a future date on the <em>Astute<\/em>-class\u00a0nuclear-powered attack submarines (SSN) in service with the Royal Navy.<\/p>\n<p>Used to provide cooling for SSN reactor and auxiliary systems, the HEATEX units have been sourced from France due to their \u201cbespoke\u201d design, according to a contract award notice posted by the UK government.<\/p>\n<p>The notice stated that Naval Group, as the original equipment manufacturer of the HEATEX units, was the only company with the necessary technical drawings and specialist tooling to supply the systems, which will be manufactured to an \u201cimproved specification\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Valued at \u00a312.5m ($15.5m), the contract follows an earlier deal in 2024 for the supply of two HEATEX systems.<\/p>\n<p>The UK currently operates five\u00a0<em>Astute<\/em>-class SSNs, with HMS\u00a0<em>Astute<\/em>\u00a0commissioned into service in 2010. This was followed by HMS\u00a0<em>Ambush<\/em>\u00a0(2013), HMS\u00a0<em>Artful<\/em>\u00a0(2016), HMS\u00a0<em>Audacious<\/em>\u00a0(2020), and HMS\u00a0<em>Anson<\/em>\u00a0(2022).<\/p>\n<p>In addition, HMS\u00a0<em>Agamemnon<\/em>\u00a0is undergoing pre-sea trial testing\u00a0at the BAE Systems Barrow-in-Furness facility, where the final\u00a0<em>Astute<\/em>-class SSN, HMS\u00a0<em>Agincourt<\/em>, is also under construction.<\/p>\n<p>In October 2024 a fire broke out\u00a0at the BAE Systems Devonshire Dock Hall\u00a0in Barrow-in-Furness, with local authorities issuing warning notices and calling on residents to stay inside their homes.<\/p>\n<p>The cause of the fire was not determined at the time, nor any immediate impact to submarine manufacturing.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-at-the-core-of-astute-propulsion\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">At the core of Astute propulsion<\/h2>\n<p>Central to the propulsion of the Astute class in the Rolls-Royce PWR 2 pressurised water reactor, which has a full life core, meaning it will not need to be refuelled throughout its time in service.<\/p>\n<p>Other main machinery systems include two Alstom turbines and a single shaft with a Rolls-Royce pump-jet propulsor, which consists of moving rotor blades within a fixed duct.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, there are two diesel alternators, one emergency drive motor, and one auxiliary retractable propeller. The\u00a0<em>Astute<\/em>-class submarines feature an MTU 600kW diesel generator.<\/p>\n<p>CAE Electronics provided the digital, integrated controls and instrumentation system for steering, diving, depth control and platform management.<\/p>\n<p>The PWR 2 second-generation nuclear reactor was developed for the\u00a0<em>Vanguard<\/em>-class nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarines.
