{"id":1355,"date":"2026-01-14T08:17:33","date_gmt":"2026-01-14T06:17:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thedefencenews.com\/?p=1355"},"modified":"2025-12-23T13:15:02","modified_gmt":"2025-12-23T11:15:02","slug":"bae-details-latest-test-success-with-solar-powered-phasa-35","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thedefencenews.com\/?p=1355","title":{"rendered":"BAE details latest test success with solar-powered PHASA-35"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>BAE Systems has detailed its latest series of test flights using the Prismatic-developed PHASA-35, as it promotes the ultra-long-endurance type for operational use from 2026.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe solar-powered aircraft flew for 24h, climbing to more than 66,000ft and cruising in the stratosphere, before successfully landing in a serviceable condition, meaning it was ready to fly again just two days later,\u201d BAE says.<\/p>\n<div class=\"inline_image image_size_full\" data-attachment=\"106960\" data-sequence=\"1\">\n<div class=\"inline_meta\">\n<p class=\"inline_caption\">Unmanned aircraft has a 35m wingspan and weighs just 150kg<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Launched from the Spaceport America site in New Mexico and flown over the White Sands Missile Range, the recent activity was sponsored by the US Army Space and Missile Defense Command Technical Center.<\/p>\n<p>Described as a high-altitude pseudo-satellite, the uncrewed aerial system weighs 150kg (330lb), has a 35m (115ft) wingspan, and a payload capacity of 15kg. It has been designed to perform military roles such as intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, and was equipped with a BAE-developed software-defined radio payload for the recent campaign.<\/p>\n<div class=\"inline_image image_size_full\" data-attachment=\"106960\" data-sequence=\"1\">\n<p class=\"picture\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyloaded\" executive of BAE subsidiary Prismatic. \u201cWe\u2019re committed to continuing to develop PHASA-35 at pace to make it available for operational activity as soon as 2026.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"inline_image image_size_full\" data-attachment=\"106961\" data-sequence=\"2\">\n<div class=\"inline_meta\">\n<p class=\"inline_caption\">Recent trials flown over New Mexico saw the PHASA-35 carry a software-defined radio payload<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Meanwhile, BAE says a further development of the aircraft has been built at Prismatic\u2019s facility in Alton, Hampshire, the UK. \u201cThe new model has more than twice the onboard solar power generation and storage capacity than the current version,\u201d it states. \u201cThese modifications are expected to allow it to demonstrate stratospheric missions of increasing duration and complexity from next year onwards.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dave Holmes, managing director, of BAE\u2019s FalconWorks advanced research and development arm, says the recent programme successes \u201cdemonstrate the credibility and capability of the system for operational use\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to its potential military applications, BAE also sees the PHASA-35 platform as suitable for use in the civilian sphere as a communications network node, or to support tasks such as border protection and disaster
