{"id":1287,"date":"2026-01-18T08:16:12","date_gmt":"2026-01-18T06:16:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thedefencenews.com\/?p=1287"},"modified":"2025-12-23T13:15:30","modified_gmt":"2025-12-23T11:15:30","slug":"china-unveils-amphibious-assault-ship-that-can-launch-fighter-jets","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thedefencenews.com\/?p=1287","title":{"rendered":"China unveils amphibious assault ship that can launch fighter jets"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 kEzXdV body-paragraph body-paragraph\">China launched a new amphibious assault ship, capable of launching fighter jets and designed to strengthen the navy\u2019s combat ability in distant seas.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 kEzXdV body-paragraph body-paragraph\">The Sichuan, the first ship of the Type 076, is China\u2019s largest such ship yet, displacing 40,000 tons and equipped with an electromagnetic catapult that will allow fighter jets to launch directly off its deck, according to the official Xinhua news agency.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 kEzXdV body-paragraph body-paragraph\">The ship is designed to launch ground troops in landing crafts and provide them with air support.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 kEzXdV body-paragraph body-paragraph\">Developed by Chinese researchers, it\u2019s also equipped with an \u201carrestor technology\u201d that allows fighter jets to land on its deck.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 kEzXdV body-paragraph body-paragraph\">China\u2019s first amphibious assault ships, the Type 075, launched in 2019.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 kEzXdV body-paragraph body-paragraph\">China\u2019s People\u2019s Liberation Army Navy, or PLAN, has been working on modernizing its forces for more than a decade, with the aim of being able to operate globally rather than being restricted to waters near the Chinese mainland. China first managed to launch fighter jets with the new electromagnetic technology on its indigenously made\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/beijing-china-shanghai-government-and-politics-6ce51d1901b3a5658cc9ef7e62b65000\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">aircraft carrier<\/a>, the Fujian, which launched two years ago.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 kEzXdV body-paragraph body-paragraph\">Chinese military expert Song Zhongping compared the Sichuan to a \u201clight aircraft carrier,\u201d according to the Global Times.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 kEzXdV body-paragraph body-paragraph\">The ship will undergo further testing, including sea trials.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 kEzXdV body-paragraph body-paragraph\">China has the largest navy in the world and is consistently trying to upgrade its fleet. Recently, researchers found that the country is working on designing a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/china-nuclear-aircraft-carrier-3e693365eb914324cc5e6b7dd33df73b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">nuclear-powered aircraft carrier<\/a>, which would allow it to deploy its ships in distant waters without needing a base to refuel.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 kEzXdV body-paragraph body-paragraph\">The U.S. currently has 11 aircraft carriers, all nuclear powered, allowing it to keep multiple strike groups deployed around the world at all times, including in the Asia-Pacific.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>China launched a new amphibious assault ship, capable of launching fighter jets and designed to strengthen the navy\u2019s combat ability in distant seas.
